Lung-Sparing Resection

Lung-Sparing Pulmonary Resection

High risk patients with limited lung capacity can be treated with a number of lung-sparing techniques such as anatomic segmentectomy and bronchoplastic "sleeve resection" that minimize the loss of adjacent functional lung tissue. These limited resections in many cases have achieved survival rates as good as those obtained with more traditional lobectomy and pneumonectomy.

Limited pulmonary resection of peripheral malignant lung nodules with a 2- cm. margin may be achieved with a traditional open "wedge resection", video - assisted wedge resection or using electrocautery or laser resection techniques.
