The University of Michigan's Section of Thoracic Surgery not only has a rich history, but also leads the way for the future of our speciality. Our faculty has made significant advancements nationally in the clinical practices of Thoracic Surgery. We provide a comprehensive outpatient and inpatient service - both diagnostic and therapeutic - for patients with surgical diseases of the trachea, lung, mediastinum, diaphragm, and esophagus including reflux and its complications, neuromotor abnormalities, and tumors. Care for adult patients requiring lung transplantation and lung volume reduction surgery for emphysema is also provided. Thoracoscopic (video-assisted) thoracic surgery is performed routinely for lung, including lobectomies, pleural biopsies and the treatment of hyperhidrosis by sympathetectomy.

We are committed to improving our patient and referring physician satisfaction. Using established algorithms, our clerical staff gathers pertinent information regarding patients referred to us, so that data can be reviewed prior to the office visit, thereby expediting the actual consultation with us. The patient's visit is coordinated so that when possible, additional studies such as CT scans, barium swallow, pulmonary function tests, etc., as well as necessary consultations, are obtained on the same day. Educational videotapes, brochures, support groups, and other sources of information are available to our patients.

Our research laboratory, continues to lead the way in advancing the field of Thoracic Surgery, specifically with esophageal and lung cancer.
