biography

I have 4 major areas of research interest, all within the discipline of health services and related to improving the quality of care, with an emphasis on the outcomes of socially vulnerable populations. Topic areas are as follows:

1) Understanding and reducing racial, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in surgical outcomes, funded by the American Cancer Society.

2) Quality and processes of care for colon and rectal cancer. 3) Patient centered outcomes in colon and rectal surgery, and 4) Measuring non-fatal outcomes to assess the quality of surgical care.

I am studying issues 1), 2) and 4) with a generous 5-year Career Development Award from the American Cancer Society. I am studying issue 3) Patient Centered Outcomes among Ulcerative Colitis patients with a Limited Project Grant from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Finally, I have recently begun a pilot study of the relationship of race to experiences and perspectives of patients with colorectal cancer with an award from the Jeffrey A. Colby Colon Cancer Research Fund.
