The Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers a six-year integrated plastic surgery residency. Our RRC-accredited program provides a diverse experience in all areas of clinical plastic surgery; graduates are eligible to sit for the American Board of Plastic Surgery qualifying and certifying examinations. Our strong academic program provides the opportunity to gain additional training in preparation for a career as an academic surgeon.

Our clinical teaching faculty includes ten full-time faculty at the University of Michigan Medical Center and six associate faculty members at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Residents rotate at the University of Michigan Health Center, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center. Our 72 month long clinical training program includes 38 months of plastic surgery rotations, 6 months of sub-specialty rotations (Orthopedics, Oral Surgery, Otolaryngology), 8 months of trauma-burn rotation, and 20 months of general surgery rotations. On all rotations the residents have an opportunity to perform a wide variety of procedures. The plastic surgery component of the program provides clinical rotations focusing on microsurgery, craniofacial, and, cleft palate, head and neck cancer, breast reconstruction, burn reconstruction, transgender and aesthetic surgery.

The Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery maintains active research in basic sciences, anatomy, microsurgery and craniofacial surgery with 7 full time or cross-appointed PhD faculty involved in our research effort. Residents are encouraged to participate in these projects, and there is opportunity for residents to take time from their clinical residency to pursue research or other academic training.
