Stewart C. Wang, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Director of Burn Critical Care, in the Division of Trauma Burn Critical Care. Dr. Wang received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He subsequently completed his general surgery training at the University of Pittsburgh. During the course of his surgical training, Dr. Wang completed a Ph.D. in Immunology/Pathology as well as a surgical research fellowship. He is board certified in General Surgery. Dr. Wang joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1995.
Dr. Wang's clinical interests and expertise are in the areas of trauma, burn, and general surgery. He has special expertise in the area of surgical infections and inflammation.
Dr. Wang is Director of the University of Michigan Program for Injury Research and Education (UMPIRE) as well as Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Wang has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1990 and also holds funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Active areas of research investigation include: 1) immunologic responses following burn injury, 2) gene therapy modulation of immune responses to infection, 3) mechanisms of lung injury following trauma and 4) mechanisms of motor vehicle crash injury. Dr. Wang is also director of a training program that educates automotive engineers in the treatment and prevention of blunt trauma injury.
