Career

Dr. Herbert Sloan graduated from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1940 and completed his general surgery residency there in 1944. He completed his thoracic surgery training at the University of Michigan in 1949 and joined the faculty as an Instructor. He was rapidly promoted through the ranks and was named Professor of Surgery in 1962, leading the Section of Thoracic Surgery from 1970 to 1985. He held numerous important positions at the University of Michigan including Chief of Clinical Affairs, Medical Director of the Operating Rooms and Medical Director of M-Care HMO and was appointed Emeritus Professor of Surgery in July, 1987.

Accomplishments

In addition to his pioneering work in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Dr. Sloan has served as Editor of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, President of the Association for Thoracic Surgery and President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He has received numerous honors and awards throughout his distinguished career including The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Distinguished Service Award, Presidential Societies Service Citation, and the establishment by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons of the Herbert Sloan Commemorative Lectureship in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He became a member of the Angell Society of the University of Michigan in 2002.

His bibliography includes more than 150 journal articles, two books, and 14 book chapters.
