Career
Marvin M. Kirsh, M.D. earned his undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins
University and his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1959.
He trained in both general and thoracic surgery at the University of
Michigan and has remained here throughout his career. In 1990 Dr. Kirsh
was appointed Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Ann Arbor Veterans
Administration Hospital. He now holds Emeritus Professor status at both
the University of Michigan and the University of California Irvine Medical
Center.
Accomplishments
Dr. Kirsh's achieved full professorship status at the University of Michigan
after only six years on the faculty. Through his expertise in teaching, he
has trained many of the finest cardiac, general and thoracic surgeons in the
field today. While maintaining his active clinical practice, Dr. Kirsh
received numerous research grants, served on numerous editorial boards and
NIH Study Sections. He is a member of all the important surgery and thoracic
surgery professional societies and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award
from the American Heart Association in 1997. 2005 marked the inauguration
of the Helen F. and Marvin M. Kirsh Professorship in Cardiac Surgery honoring
Dr. Kirsh's many outstanding professional achievements. His bibliography
includes more than 200 journal articles, and 19 book chapters.
