Welcome .: A Letter from Dr. Mulholland
Welcome to the University of Michigan Department of Surgery. I am Michael Mulholland, the Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and I am so pleased that you want to learn more about our department. These are exciting times for the University of Michigan, and the Department of Surgery is an incredibly vibrant group of individuals dedicated to the very best in patient care, research, and education.
Michigan surgery continues a proud 150 year tradition of excellence in our clinical, research and education missions. However, we are not focused upon past accomplishments; surgery is in a period of enormous growth and change, and we are looking forward to a very bright future.
In summer 2007, we opened the new Cardiovascular Center, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the highest levels of collaborative patient care, team work, and innovation. Ground breaking discoveries in cancer biology have fueled the department's growth in cancer care, and are bringing new hope to thousands of Michigan patients. The Department of Surgery at Michigan is pioneering the concept of fetal surgery, and our pediatric surgical programs are ranked among the best in the country. Our solid organ transplant program has become among the highest volume and most innovative in the country.
The Department of Surgery's 200 surgeons, residents and investigators are dedicated to excellence in the care of patients from across the State of Michigan and outreach efforts are aimed at patients and families throughout the United States and around the globe. There is a real excitement in the Department of Surgery, as we work to improve medical practice today, while inventing the "surgery of the future". Our passion for expert and innovative patient care is the true Michigan Difference.
