Biography

Steven J. Kasten, M.D. serves as an Associate Professor in the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University Michigan School of Medicine. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Kasten received his M.D. degree from The University of Michigan. He completed his Plastic Surgery Fellowship training at the University of Michigan. He rejoined the faculty at the University of Michigan where he has been a full time academic surgeon since 2003. Dr. Kasten serves as the Program Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Michigan, and has a Masters in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois in Chicago.

Dr. Kasten is an active member of many national specialty societies including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Association of Plastic Surgeons, American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association, American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Association for Surgical Education, and American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons. He also serves as an oral examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is co-editor of A Guide for Researchers in Surgical Education and has authored multiple scientific publications. His research focus is surgical education.

Clinical Focus

Dr. Kasten specializes in pediatric and craniofacial plastic surgery, including cleft lip and palate, vascular anomalies, facial reconstruction after trauma and cancer resection, and general pediatric plastic surgery. He is Director of the Vascular Anomalies Team and Associate Director of the Craniofacial Anomalies Program.
