Begun by Dr. Reed O. Dingman in 1964, the Section of Plastic Surgery is committed to the care of patients with reconstructive needs resulting from cancer surgery, craniofacial or congenital anomalies, burns, trauma, amputations, and chronic wounds. Today, the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan is one of the most successful research units in Plastic Surgery in the world. Our faculty and residents are nationally recognized for pioneering clinical and basic science research in areas such as wound healing, peripheral nerve reconstruction, neuromuscular reconstruction, craniofacial bone biology, distraction osteogenesis, tissue engineering, breast reconstruction outcomes, and hand surgery outcomes.
