We have a national reputation in the management of cleft lip and palate and craniofacial surgery. Multidisciplinary teams of pediatric physicians coordinate services and perform major reconstructive procedures. Plastic Surgeons trained in maxillofacial surgery also care for adult patients with Orthognathic or Craniofacial deformities as well as patients with immediate or late post-traumatic facial disfigurement.

Healing & Hope

Because your child is a treasure, we put him or her at the center of attention. We are entirely devoted to the care of children by building an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan to address his or her unique physical and emotional needs based upon ongoing communication between your child, your family, and your physicians.

It is important for you to know that our board-certified team of pediatric physicians has a great deal of experience taking care of children like yours and the outlook for the future in terms of your child's appearance, function, and psychosocial well-being is excellent.

All of your child's treatment needs can be fulfilled at the University of Michigan Hospitals & Clinics. We are a "one-stop" medical facility which makes it easier for you to address all of your medical needs (and easier for your physicians to communicate with each other) without having to be shuttled from one doctor's office to another.

If you are traveling to the University of Michigan from out of town and plan to spend an overnight or your child will require several days of hospitalization, here is a partial list of places to stay. Craniofacial Anomalies Program & Cleft Palate Center

The Craniofacial Anomalies Program & Cleft Palate Center at the University of Michigan has become one of the largest programs in the country. Our multidisciplinary "Team" approach was developed in 1955 and is currently directed by the Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery. The Craniofacial Anomalies Program offers a team of specialists working together to ensure the physical health, growth and development of your child. The team has grown to include 47 members in 22 medical and dental specialties who are experienced in the care of children with cleft lip and palate and complex craniofacial anomalies. Many disciplines along with plastic surgery are involved in treating the children in our program. Such disciplines include neurosurgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, psychology, orthodontics, otolaryngology, speech / language pathology, social work, genetics, nutrition, and pediatrics. We serve patients of any age with cleft lip, cleft palate, jaw or craniofacial malformations. Experience has shown that it is not possible for a single physician to treat all the special medical, dental, educational, psychological and communication needs of children dealing with such conditions. Depending on your child's condition, you may see some or all of these specialists during your clinic visit. At the end of the day, the team will meet to discuss each of the children seen. At that point, findings and recommendations will be shared with parents and professionals outside the hospital who are caring for the child.
