Tetraplegia

What is Tetraplegia?

Tetraplegia (quadriplegia) is the paralysis of all four limbs. Depending on the level of injury, abdominal and chest muscles may be affected - causing difficulties breathing. These injuries are devastating for the patient and their family.

What causes Tetraplegia?

Tetraplegia is the result of injury to the cervical spinal cord. Most injuries are from a trauma to the spine, such as a diving accident, motor vehicle accident or traumatic fall.

What are the treatment options?

A qualified, comprehensive medical team is necessary to manage treatment for these patients. U-M Model Spinal Cord Injury Care System is proud to be one of the 16 institutions in the United States to be classified as a Model Spinal Cord Injury Center by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).
