Michigan Pediatric Device Consortium
M-PED, the Michigan Pediatric Device Consortium, provides resources and support for innovation in pediatric medicine. Funded in part by the FDA Office of Orphan Products Development, M-PED helps advance medical device ideas from their earliest stages to commercial readiness. Experienced professionals from both inside the University and outside provide real-world guidance—informed by industry needs, regulatory guidance and healthcare trends—to faculty and students interested in improving children’s health. Hands-on services include facilitating collaborative design and brainstorming sessions, providing clinical feedback, preparing preliminary industry assessments, and assisting with funding applications and product development planning. Design & Prototype Lab
The Design & Prototype Lab is a fee-for-service facility that is equipped with some of the most advanced prototyping equipment in the State of Michigan. Clients of the Design & Prototype Lab benefit from integrated industrial design and engineering support to optimize function and usability of future products. The D&P Lab can design and fabricate medical devices, tools, and prototypes. It maintains relationships with other campus and regional design and prototyping services to complement its capabilities. In coordination with the M-PED team, lab personnel assist inventors during the product development process, optimizing the function of products and systems. For students in healthcare-related product development courses, the D&P Lab provides in-course training on prototyping, design assistance, and both traditional and rapid prototyping services.
