Pre-Operative Sigmoidoscopy

Diet

Clear liquid diet the day before the procedure. The morning of the examination, DO NOT eat or drink ANYTHING.

Medications

Medications should be taken as prescribed by the physician. Those medications, which need to be taken with water, should be taken with the least possible amount.

Preparation

The Evening before the Appointment

Administer 1 enema. Follow the instructions on the package for administrating the enema.

The Morning of the Appointment

Repeat the enema. If the results of this enema are not clear, repeat the enema.

The Enema should be:

Adult fleets - you will need to buy 3.

-OR-

Tap water enema: 125 - 150cc volume. If the Fleets enema "burns" use the tap water enema. You may refill the fleets container with tap water (It has a screw-on top).

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE STEPS CLOSELY. THE SIGMOIDOSCOPY CANNOT BE DONE UNLESS THE PREPARATION IS PROPERLY COMPLETED!

The sigmoidoscopy itself lasts about 10 minutes.
