Pyloromyotomy Post-Operative Information

Feedings

Formula feedings should be limited to 2 ounces every three hours for the first two days and then the baby may return to a regular feeding schedule. The baby should be kept in an upright position for thirty minutes after feedings. This will help prevent gastroesophageal reflux. The baby may spit up a small amount, which is normal.

Incision

The incision should be kept clean and dry. Leave the Steri Strips or tape in place until they fall off by themselves. You may sponge bathe the baby for five days following the surgery, and then resume normal bathing.

Activity

There are no activity restrictions following this operation. It is best, however, to lift the baby by supporting their bottom and head, and NOT lifting under the arms. Lifting under the arms puts tension on the stitches and may cause pain.

Pain

There is not usually a lot of pain for the baby after the operation. When you go home, you may give Tylenol in a dose appropriate for age every four hours, for twenty-four hours.

Return to Clinic

Your baby will need to be seen in the Pediatric Surgery Clinic about two weeks after the surgery. The Pediatric Surgery Clinic is located on the third floor of Mott Hospital.

When to Call

Call the clinic if you notice increased redness, swelling, tenderness, or drainage from the incision, or any increased vomiting, or fever above 101.
