Body CT Preparation

Procedure

The CT scan is done in Radiology (X-Ray) department. The CT Scanner does not touch the child. The child must remain still and in the scanner for 15 to 20 minutes. The majority of CT scans are performed with intravenous (IV) contrast.

Preparation

  1. Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to the test (except oral Hypaque, if indicated).
  2. Sedation: Infants and toddlers often require sedation medication prior to the CT, as they are not able to remain still long enough without sedation.

Medication

Abdominal and/or pelvic CT requires that all patients take Hypaque. The Hypaque given orally before the CT is extremely important. This contrast allows the Radiologist to distinguish normal intestine from abnormal. The Hypaque may be mixed with Kool-Aid, apple juice, soda or any favorite CLEAR beverage.

You will be asked to arrive 2 hours prior to the CT in order to take the Hypaque oral contrast.

Someone from the Mott Radiology Department will telephone you the day prior to the appointment to confirm your time and preparations.
