Small Left Colon SyndromeNewborns with this process will present with signs and symptoms consistent with intestinal obstruction. Barium enema (dye placed into the rectum with X-ray evaluation) demonstrates a small, smooth, rounded left colon with a normal upstream large intestine. This abnormality is often found in infants with diabetic mothers. Barium enema is often curative and the size of the left colon subsequently normalizes over the ensuing weeks to months.
