Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical specialty that involves the treatment of diseases and disorders of the oral cavity and supporting structures. This definition includes a broad range of treatments the full extent of which ranges from minimally invasive procedures such as tooth extraction and implant placement to more invasive procedures such as repositioning of misaligned maxillae and mandibles (upper and lower jaw) or resection of oral/cervical (neck) cancer, followed by reconstruction of the lost hard and soft tissues.

At the University of Michigan the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery practices the full scope of the specialty. We maintain clinics at the University of Michigan Medical Center and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. While our primary concern is excellence in patient care. We are also dedicated to furthering the specialty through the training of residents as well as contributing to the body of basic science and clinical research in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The patients we treat typically arrive to us by referral from other dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and physicians. However, we also treat patients in the emergency department who have sustained injuries to the mouth, face, and neck, those who are looking for a second opinion, and any patient who wishes to schedule an appointment. Residents are closely involved in patient management, but only under the direct supervision and guidance of the faculty. This relationship allows for resident education while maintaining the high standard of patient care.

Please wander around our website. We hope that it will give those interested a better understanding of the specialty and an appreciation of our dedication to our patients and our discipline.
