biography

Nabeel R. Obeid, MD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Minimally-Invasive Surgery, Department of Surgery at Michigan Medicine. He is a native of Michigan, born and raised in the Detroit metropolitan area. He attended the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with High Distinction in 2006. He then completed his medical education in 2010 at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Obeid furthered his training in general surgery at New York University School of Medicine as house officer of NYU Langone Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital Center, and the Manhattan Veterans Affairs Hospital. He graduated as academic chief resident in 2016. He subsequently completed an accredited fellowship in minimally-invasive and bariatric surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital. He joined the faculty at Michigan Medicine in September 2017.

In addition to core general surgery, Dr. Obeid’s clinical interests include advanced laparoscopy, bariatric surgery, diseases of the foregut (reflux disease, paraesophageal/hiatal hernias, esophageal dysmotility), hernias, and diagnostic and therapeutic upper endoscopy.

He is passionate about surgical education, including resident skills training and student teaching. His research interests include clinical outcomes after bariatric surgery and has presented at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. Obeid is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
