John D. Birkmeyer, M.D., Professor of Surgery, is a member of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery. He received his Bachelors degree at Boston College and his M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School in 1989. Dr. Birkmeyer completed his General Surgery residency and a fellowship in Medical Informatics at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, graduating in 1996. He then joined the Dartmouth faculty, later serving as Chief of the Section of General Surgery. He joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2004 as the George D. Zuidema Professor and Chair of Surgical Outcomes Research.
Dr. Birkmeyer's clinical practice has been devoted to advanced laparoscopy since 1999, including surgery for gastroesophageal reflux, gallbladder disease, and abdominal wall and groin hernias. His expertise also includes surgery for severe obesity. In 2005, he became Director of Bariatric Surgery at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Birkmeyer is a national leader in surgical outcomes research, quality, and health policy. He has a long record of research funding by the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality. He has served in advisory roles for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Institute of Medicine, the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, and the Leapfrog Group, a large coalition of health care purchasers. Dr. Birkmeyer is Director of the Michigan Surgical Collaborative for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (M-SCORE) center at the University of Michigan.
