biography

Dr. Brian George is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Acute Care Surgery, Section of General Surgery, at the University of Michigan. He provides clinical care in trauma surgery, non-trauma emergency surgery, general surgery and surgical critical care.

Dr. George received his BSE in Engineering Physics at the University of Michigan before obtaining his MD from the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. He went on to complete his surgical residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. During his residency he also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Surgical Education Research at Northwestern University, a post-doctoral fellowship in Surgical Education and Leadership at the American College of Surgeons, and a Masters of Education at the University of California Berkeley. He completed his Trauma/Critical Care fellowship at the University of Washington’s Harborview Medical Center prior to joining the faculty at the University of Michigan.

Research:

Dr. George studies how to improve the quality of the physician workforce through performance measurement, educational innovation, and policy. Dr. George is also the co-founder of a multi-institutional non-profit research consortium (Procedural Learning and Safety Collaborative) which is leading a national initiative in healthcare education quality improvement. He has co-edited a textbook for medical students, teaches nationally on topics related to surgical education, and has won numerous local and national teaching awards.
