biography

Dr. Alfred E. Chang is the Hugh Cabot Professor of Surgery. He is also Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology. He completed his undergraduate training at Dartmouth College in 1971 and completed his medical education at Dartmouth Medical School and Harvard Medical School in 1974. His general surgical residency was obtained at Duke University Medical Center (1974-1976) and the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania (1979-1982). Between 1976-1979, he completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the Surgery Branch, National Cancer Institute. After his surgical training, Dr. Chang became a senior investigator at the Surgery Branch, NCI (1982-1987). In 1987, Dr. Chang joined the faculty at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Chang's clinical interests are related to general surgical oncology. He has expertise in the areas of breast cancer, melanoma, liver tumors and colorectal cancer. He has been director for the multidisciplinary Breast Care Center and the director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program of the U of M Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Ladies Home Journal (2002) and Redbook (2002) have named Dr. Chang as Top Doctor. He has also been named as one of the Best Doctors in America consistently every year since 1998 (Woodward/White survey).

Dr. Chang runs a laboratory program that has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years. His research focuses on tumor immunology, immunotherapy, and gene therapy. He is co-Director of the Immunological Monitoring Core of the Cancer Center. In addition, he has trained many fellows in the laboratory and is Program Director for an NIH training grant entitled, "University of Michigan Surgical Oncology Research Training Program." He is on editorial boards of numerous surgery and oncology journals. He is an editor of a major surgery textbook and oncology textbook used in medical schools. He has been a member of the Experimental Therapeutics 2, the Subcommittee D-Clinical Trials and Clinical Oncology NIH study sections.

Besides the administrative duties involving the U of M Cancer Center and the Division of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Chang has held several roles in national organizations. He has been a member of the Executive Council of the Society of Surgical Oncology. He has been an American College of Surgeons Governor-at-large for the state of Michigan. He has served as a member of the American College of Surgeons Commission of Cancer.
