![]() General Surgery RotationsExperience in general surgery is gained through rotation on the general surgery services at the junior resident level. Residents rotate through all general surgery services at both integrated hospitals (GI surgery, surgical oncology, surgery-transplant, surgery-endocrine/colorectal, critical care, non-trauma emergency and trauma/burn emergency) to gain experience in the core areas of general surgery. Trainees receive exposure to diseases of the breast, skin and soft tissues on the surgical oncology service, and through a breast surgery rotation at the HO-3 level. Experience in endocrine and head and neck surgery is gained through extensive experience on the endocrine surgery service. Vascular and trauma experiences are gained on these respective services. All operative experience at the integrated hospitals is generated from patient visits to faculty group practice clinics within the confines of the UMMC Taubman Center, U-M Cancer Center, or the VA Hospital outpatient clinic. Such clinics are jointly run by faculty and resident house staff, and trainees evaluate the patients prospectively with faculty. House officers actively participate in the initial assessment and decision making, and then care for the patient at the time of operation. Postoperative evaluations are done in the same clinic, providing trainees with continuity of care. Critical care is the responsibility of residents on all services, and such care is provided in a collaborative fashion with the surgical critical care program. Each resident has hands-on experience with large numbers of ICU patients each year.
