Basic Science Training
There is a continuing need to understand the basic physiology underlying surgical pathophysiology. This understanding is critical to the advancement of the field by insights generating new management strategies. Basic science instruction is thus an integral part of the residency program.
- Basic science instruction as it relates to clinical material occurs primarily at the Thursday Morning Conference - especially within the Foundations of Surgery series.
- Particularly as it is related to physiology, basic science is brought into discussion at the weekly Critical Care Conference. Important clinical and basic research literature is reviewed at specialty conferences.
- Basic science is also discussed during the ABSITE review conference.
- Basic science is discussed regularly at the weekly Research Conference, primarily in the lecture format, provided by lab year residents, faculty and visiting professors. In addition to new data, experimental design and subject reviews are discussed at this conference. This is a well-attended conference, aimed at lab-year residents and basic scientists in the medical center, but attended by clinical trainees as well on an optional basis. A weekly review of data and experimental design is also held for all lab-year residents.
