Dr. Merion was graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1979 and competed a residency training program in general surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan in 1986. During his residency, he spent two years with Sir Roy Y. He also serves as the director of the University of Michigan's American Society of Transplant Surgeons-approved fellowship training program in kidney, pancreas, and liver transplantation.

Dr. Merion is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in medical informatics, particularly in the field of transplantation, where in addition to his role with the SRTR, he serves in several national informatics leadership positions with the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
