biography

Keith E. Cook, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Section of General Surgery, Division of Acute Care Surgery, at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He also holds a joint appointment with the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Cook graduated with a BSE in both Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science from the University of Michigan in 1993. In 2000, he received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University in Chicago. In 1998 - 2002, Dr. Cook was the Research Laboratory Director in the Division of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgery at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. From 2001-2002, he was a Research Assistant Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University. In 2002, Dr. Cook joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Health System as a Senior Research Associate. In 2003, he was appointed Research Investigator, and in 2007 he was promoted to Research Assistant Professor.

Dr. Cook has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including the American Society of Artificial Organs (ASAIO) Young Investigator Award in 2003 and the ASAIO Medforte Innovation Fellowship in 2007.

Dr. Cook's research interests are advanced life support, artificial lung/oxygenator design and testing, blood-biomaterial interactions, cardiopulmonary hemodynamics, right ventricular mechanics, and mathematical modeling of cardiovascular systems.
