biography

Emily V. A. Finlayson, M.D. is Assistant Professor in the Section of General Surgery at the University of Michigan Health Systems. Dr. Finlayson received her undergraduate degree in Classical Civilizations at Yale University in 1989. She obtained her medical degree in 1997, from Harvard Medical School and went on to her general surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center. Prior to completing her general surgery residency in June of 2004, Dr. Finlayson finished a two year (2000-2002) Research Fellowship at the Center for Evaluate Clinical Sciences, Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire and the V.A. Outcomes Group, V.A. Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont. Following completion of her residency program in general surgery, Dr. Finlayson went on to a one year Fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Finlayson joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Health Systems in September of 2005. Her clinical interests are colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, with a focus on laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery.

Dr. Finlayson's research is in clinical epidemiology and health services research with a special interest in surgical risk and outcomes in the elderly.
