Emergency Surgery

The Division of Acute Care Surgery's emergency surgery service provides acute general surgery patients with a timely surgical assessment and operative management. The development of an emergency surgery service at UMHS concentrates the care of the patient onto one service. This allows for the development of evidence-based medicine and management guidelines to care for patients which in turn, decreases variability in treatment, cost of care and improves patient outcomes.

The emergency surgery service will educate medical students, residents and clinical fellows to increase their understanding of acute general surgical problems. Medical students will develop their initial understanding of the acute abdomen. Surgical residents can advance their understanding of abdominal complications, the pathophysiology of acute surgical disease, resuscitation and complex care of the surgical patient. Clinical fellows can focus on surgical infections, complications of acute surgical disease and complex surgical management.

The emergency surgery service uses an evidence-based medicine approach to manage acute surgical disease. From the emergency department to the operating room to the ICU to the floor, the care of the patient is coordinated. Our primary mission is to decrease morbidity, mortality, length of stay and the cost of caring for acute surgical patients, while improving our understanding of surgical disease and providing exceptional patient care.
