Trauma Burn

The University of Michigan's Trauma Burn Center is a Level 1 Trauma and Burn Verified Center, recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association as meeting or exceeding the highest standards of care for the most critically injured patients. As the state's only Burn Verified Center the U of M is a recognized leader not only in treating the more severely burn-injured patients, but also in burn prevention, education and research.

Surgical Critical Care

Surgical Critical Care is coordinated through this Division, providing ongoing care for patients in the trauma-burn intensive care unit as well as the surgical intensive care unit. Emergency surgery patients as well as those requiring specialized pulmonary, renal, cardiovascular, neurological or post-operative monitoring are managed by the Division of Acute Care Surgery. As part of this service, the extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support for critically ill patients is provided within the UMHS as well as during transportation of patients from outside institutions.

Emergency Surgery

U-M Emergency Surgery provides acute general surgery patients with a timely surgical assessment and operative management. The development of an emergency surgery service at UMHS concentrates the care of the patient onto one service. This allows for the development of evidence-based medicine and management guidelines to care for patients which in turn, decreases variability in treatment, cost of care and improves patient outcomes.
