The Future of Cardiac SurgeryAs cardiac surgery continues to evolve there are several exciting areas of research interest. The area of genetic and tissue engineering has produced preliminary studies showing success of skeletal myoblast transplantation into models of heart failure. Tissue engineered valves with endothelial cell growth on biodegradable polymers is another promising field currently under investigation by members of our faculty. The development of less invasive cardiac procedures continues to evolve. These alternative techniques provide suitable patients the option of quicker recovery when compared to more traditional operations. The use of "off pump" coronary bypass surgery affords some patients the option of avoiding the heart pump entirely. Surgical options for patients with congestive heart failure continue to improve. Left ventricular remodeling, mitral valve repair and temporary left ventricular support allow for recovery of heart function. Newer generation of assist devices are now available for destination therapy for appropriate patients. |
